How to play
Each thumb is a foot

Jump on the beat
Every jump is judged on timing. Perfect scores the most; Great and Good keep your combo going.
Clear the level, then go faster
Levels last about 30 seconds. Clear one to earn coins and win a heart back, then the tempo climbs. Miss three times and the run ends.

The real thing
Where double dutch comes from
Two ropes turn toward each other, eggbeater-style, and the jumper goes in on the beat. The name goes back to the Dutch settlers said to have brought the game to New York. What made it double dutch as people know it happened on New York City streets, where it was a popular street game for African American girls, who met on street corners to show off new tricks and turned old clotheslines into ropes.
In the early 1970s NYPD officers Ulysses Williams and David Walker wrote down the rules, and Walker founded the National Double Dutch League. In the spring of 2009 double dutch became a varsity sport in New York City public high schools.
We make Double Dutch Derby in Philadelphia, and we have been listening to people who grew up jumping: the cable from the corner store, the turner who went "double-handed", mom and sister teaching it. Know a rhyme or a rule from your block? Send it to @double.dutch.derby and we will share it with your name on it.
